ice ice baby
Broken tree branches everywhere and downed power lines and no electricity from sometime in the middle of the night until 2:30 pm this afternoon. I boiled water for my french press coffee pot (hooray!), heated up spicy lentil squash soup and made a grill cheese sandwich using tin foil - all on the top of my fire place insert. I rolled my cushy comfy sofa over in front of the fire and we (Miss D, Bleet, Oliver & I - the L'il Man antisocial and missing as usual) squished in together by the fire all morning and into the afternoon completely cozy & snug. I've spent the entire day going through my stacks of House & Garden, Domino & Blueprint magazines (all tres sadly are no more) and we've had the most perfect lovely day. I think it's good for us extremely spoiled people, with our clean running water, bathrooms and showers, electric this and electric that, our television and internet -to go without it all for a time, it kind of gives us a smack of reality and makes us really appreciate what we so take for granted each and every day. And a photo of Yessie (below) I mean Jessie who ice storm or not still stopped by for breakfast on our porch this early morning, he followed me around as I took pictures.
Were you worried about us ? You know me & my blog - I am very dedicated to this daily journal posting ritual. It is spectacularly beautiful outside but dangerous for driving and walking and branches and wires still heavy with ice are quite a hazard yet. I'm about to go out into the back yard avec my Polaroid camera. Wink.
Hey ! There's the 97' teal coloured Escort Wagon completely covered in ice.
The Ice Storm by Rick Moody a fantastic book & movie

I had a brief wonder this morning, is Susan sick? did something bad happen? but the way the weather's been, I figured it was probably something fairly benign. Glad to hear you're safe and snug! And such gorgeous images of such icky weather.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the first day without power can be cozy and peaceful, the second, third, fourth days, etc....not so much. Although this last time was only 36 hours for us. The ice storm in the '90's was 9 days straight....and in JANUARY !!! Like I said, not so much.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos!
Yay! Glad to hear your power is back on. You really DID have an ice storm! (no, haven't seen the movie, but now must)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pix! Especially that first one!
I know it causes so much inconvience but it really is breath taking in your lovely pictures! Stay warm...
ReplyDeleteI was worried this morning when there was no blog post from Susan. Lovely pictures!
ReplyDeleteGlad you did not have to do without your Mac for more than a few hours. Good excuse for a "slow day." Great photos.
ReplyDeleteThe real question is how would the day had gone if there had been no coffee?
ReplyDeleteBig Shamu you so exactly hit la nail on the head - I felt physically ill, queasy and totally yucky until I clued in that the top of my stove was large enough to hold a pot of water.
ReplyDeletehallelujah !! And ahhhh french press coffee - ya gotta love it. I'll admit it I'm a coffee freak. Wink.
you poop! Of course I was worried! I've been back and forth, ... like,...5 times already today!
ReplyDeleteWhen I get used to seeing you on a daily basis...all sorts of "things" go through my head.... acckkkk! However... watching the weather as we tend to do in Canada....I did know it wasn't exactly nice there...
the pics are beautiful.... and little Jessie is picking a careful path...
I think you need a little generator...yeh, I realize they are at least as noisy as a "you-know-what"...but, no coffee? ...hey... oh, wait...you could walk over to where somebody might have back up power...right? or .. maybe not. I'm sure little restaurants or even pizza places must have backup...well, alright then.... there is always the pioneer standby...campfire coffee. Get out there and start a bonfire if it goes on for more than a day.
I was worried too. It's good to know you and the gang are al okay.
ReplyDeleteYikes. Ice storms. Beautiful but lethal for those of us surrounded by trees. I well remember lying in bed as a little girl listening to the pine trees crack.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy you have regained power, but don't the animals keep us warm??
Susan those photos are the best! ...and yes, you are right about power cuts making us appreciate what we have. I have creature envy...bad. I would love to snuggle down with a les gang of my own!! The softness...the ears...the warmth ...you get it. You, more than anyone, get it.
ReplyDeleteI guess power was back on by time you posted. Your descriptions of making coffee and grilled toast are so delightful and cozy with couch pulled up etc.
