sweet peas no. 1 for now on an ever changing top-ten-flowers-to-grow list

In the garden I tend to drop my thoughts here & there.
To the flowers I whisper the secrets I keep, the hopes I breathe.
I know they are there to eavesdrop for the angels.

& lets not forget the insects, assorted spiders (sigh) + occasional rare tiny frog sightings

The one & only habit I want to become obsessive about this spring/summer is gardening. The Prince has recently cleared many a formerly shady place making room for loads of sun loving annuals & perennials, he's building me proper window boxes, and we're digging a much bigger & better vegetable garden this year. I want to spend my days making things & puttering in the garden. I've a long list of favourite flowers & these first 10 I'll mention here over the next month or so are constantly battling for the No. 1 spot. I love them all. psst I want a tiller.

  1. I know you're in Nova Scotia, not England - but the first thing that came to mind as I read this was a song I assign to young singing students: An English Country Garden. Lots of versions on YouTube, but this one shows pics of each garden element mentioned. Sweet! http://youtu.be/EUyxCP5Rvco And, of course, The Muppets have a version: http://youtu.be/FlpPEDuwO3w

  2. Can the prince build a mini 29 black street in the back yard as an homage to terracotta gardens? You could let it run wild with vines and let the street front be tamed. Would that make it a garden mullet... and english folly? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folly)

  3. sweet peas are one of my all-time favourites - the colours, the delicate petals, the smell *ahhhhh* and the precious memories of my grandpa's garden and cutting a bunch to put on the dinner table... beautiful :)
