Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it. Doing what you’re afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that – that is what life is. You might be really good. You might find out something about yourself that’s really special and if you’re not good, who cares? You tried something. Now you know something about yourself. Amy Poehler
I was going to title this post "do the hard thing first" because it's become one of my everyday mantras. When I plan out my day each early morning while having coffee in bed I plan to do the hardest things first, the things that aren't necessarily always difficult, scary or challenging, though sometimes they are, but more often they're the things I'm most likely to put off, to procrastinate about and ultimately wish I'd done when the day ends (giving me good reason to be disappointed in myself, something I am trying to avoid). Sometimes things like exercise, tedious tasks (sorting tax receipts, accounting, inventory taking, filing) and/or organizational stuff, like tidying my desktop/office space before I dive into Photoshop to finish up all the final art I'm currently working on. But then I read Elise's post this early morning and thought I'd leave the word "first" off my blog post title - yeah ! plain & simple "do the hard things", do the things that make you feel scared, excited, shaky. Do the things you've been telling yourself for years that you can't do or your not good at. Do something incredible, do all the things that make you feel alive.
The first blog I visit every morning, usually with my breakfast & after my power walk on the crescent beach, is Elise Blaha Cripe's blog - I've been following Elise for as long as I can remember, she's been a huge inspiration as I've watched her build her brand and grow her own creative business in huge leaps & bounds. She has a brave & courageous heart and that's what I admire most about her. She's not afraid to try and she's not afraid to fail. She recently spoke at World Domination Summit in front of 2500 people - when she first got the call/request, naturally she freaked a little, told but said yes after some thought, prepared for it like crazy & ended up rocking' the house (or very large auditorium). She's written part 1 & part 2 about that whole experience. I am so proud of her, so impressed by her, SO inspired by her, so ... want to be like her.
I want to do the hard things. I want to try everything & anything that fuels my passion. I want to be fearless. The great thing about doing the hard things, doing the things that you know you could fail miserably at is - the more you try those scary things the easier and easier it becomes to try, do & succeed at them. Love the following quote, another of my million mantras :-)
Try again. Fail again. Fail better. Samuel Beckett

2 hours of after dinner collage-a-thin with the collage cat / the dude & creative director supervising the collaging of the world - that Starbucks project - still gives me chills & thrills to say Starbucks / the beginning last night, limited palette, limited supplies & tools, limited dithering / I pick this paper / I love me some kraft cardboard / I couldn't do it without him / mid collaging / Oliver's a very paws-on Creative Director - sigh / nearing the end of my evening
Still, what I want in my life
is to be willing
to be dazzled—
to cast aside the weight of facts
and maybe even
to float a little
above this difficult world.
Mary Oliver
I'm still trying (I hate using that word trying) to carve out the daily practice of pure intuitive, playful creative time - sketchbook, drawing, painting and/or collage time. It's seeming like the post dinner time few hours is the best time for me, something at the end of my day to look forward to, a ritual to gently pull me through each day.
I've been so very super inspired by Jennifer Orkin-Lewis and her dedication to her own 30 mins a day painting sketchbook. Here's her instagram feed & daily painting posts + she's been featured in the new issue of Uppercase No.22 - check that issue out here - a gorgeous issue. Congratulations Jen, so well deserved !
+ oh boy ! you can listen to David Sedaris read his books unabridged FREE on youtube

oh my, so very lovely & so very magical - paintings by Mati Rose website + shop
Daunting & me are havin' a showdown at the OK corral. Exact date pending. My goal is to banish Daunting & his kin from these lands. Daunting iphoto (with 35,000 images - ya huh ! & I wonder why I don't do a photo calendar or a photo book). Daunting desk top files (4 years of stuff - big s-l-o-w mo eye roll & again). Daunting desk drawers - full of scraps & bits & drawing pens that don't work anymore. Daunting studio/work space just ain't cuttin' it no more - I need fresh. I need sparse. I need space. I need lightness, dark warm grey walls, curtains, order, new habits, new rituals, magic ....
I am so over you Daunting
Look out, get yourself ready ... 'cause here I come

Thanks Dave - I needed that (+ pink + dots hooray !)
That my friends 'tis les dilemma in a nut shell.
I've gone from oh my whatever will I do with my time ? (now that Number 1 freelance product design customer retired June 2010 & all my work fizzled said she who had all her eggs in one basket ? ya huh ! I did to oh my whatever should I do next so that I can keep on top of all these great opportunities plus keep working toward all those big, huge dreams & goals I have ? bit by bit, small step by small step all the while enjoying myself, remembering to breath ... but it is true I can't do everything. Darn. Something's ... gotta give.
I don't know what yet 'cause truthfully I'm still uncovering & discovering what it is I want to do. What is the thing(s) that really sets my heart a fire (that I could make a good living at) whispered by the chorus of angels. My heart is a blaze most of the time lately & it's not that I'm spending any time doing anything that I absolutely do not like doing (how lucky is that ?) but I feel there are areas of my creative abilities that have been barely tapped into because of a lack of focused, unfettered time & energy. Just having this conversation now & here makes the fire in my belly roar. I consider the beginning of my new business - this true Creative Empire began June 2010 at best friend MLou's house - she suggested that I give it my all for a year & see if I could make a living by the end of that year. If not I'd need to rethink how I would pay the bills. We're nearing June 2012 & I'm happy to say I am (barely) making that living each month and the trend is up & forward & we're (MLou, Doug & I) all in agreement that following my dreams is the way to go.
I've given myself to June 2012 (the 2 year mark) to figure out much more specifically what those dreams entail - this Hello Soul, Hello Business course with Kelly Rae Roberts & Beth Nicholls continues to be invaluable in helping me ask myself the big questions & figure all this stuff out.
I can do anything !
I can't do everything.
I need to do what I love most.
What is it I love most ?

gorgeousity from Vancouver based Banquet Atelier - recent purchases pour moi
The funny thing about me, or at least I think it's funny, is that many mornings, especially lately I have very little to say here dans les blog. The thing is - I love blogging, love my blog, love the daily ritual & routine of it - the discipline even of it all. Every now & then the deep, big thoughts do gather together in my mind & spew out here in some rather personal, honest & quite open fashion. Other days, like today, my mind is filled with little bits of randomness, superficiality, the odd kooky thing & the constant thought to remember to breath. Les to-do list doth runneth over, I find myself run-walking while making dinner even, as if it's some timed event ... 30 mins-go !!
A few assorted bits of randomness
• I've been in a reading slump - realizing finally that it was not the fault of the lovely bedside pile of book goodness from the library - but more that my brain was busy doing flip-tee-doos & somersaults (I think a lot to do with this freakin' fantastic course) with such a vengence that I've been unable to concentrate & relax enough to get into a book. Last night I began John Banville's The Sea and am loving it. (2 others waiting off stage seem promising as well - Olive Kitteridge & Everything is Illuminated - where this gorgeous but sad passage came from). A good book at bedtime is as important to my mental health as keeping my early morning journal with coffee - both relaxing, but in completely different ways. I also have the unabridged audio version of The Help to listen to while I work when I'm not snickering along with Jon Stewart & Steven Colbert.
Can you say Republican Presidential Candidate ? Hullo !
• I've become mildly hooked (read obsessed) with new Bravo show (watched on youtube) - It's a Brad, Brad World - the life of a fashion stylist in La la Land, Brad Goreski former Rachel Zoe assistant - h-o-o-k-e-d (sung by a chorus of angels) + he's Canadian. LOVE it & him.
• Have the Mad Men* theme constantly playing in my head. We begin Season 4 ce soir. Oh boy !
• have decided to practice & hone the fine art of Defensive Living (more on that later)
• banana, soy milk, fresh pineapple, coconut extract, greek yogurt smoothies every morning
• grateful & thrilled to pieces that my dance card is so full
happy weekend !!
* if you haven't watched it ... well why not ?? it's good
