The Guest House

This being human is a guest house
Every morning a new arrival

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all !
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of it's furniture,
still, treat each guest honourably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as guide from beyond.

Rumi 13th century poet*

Did you finish Case Histories? I am in the middle of One Good Turn and loving it. These are apparently part of a trilogy, because Jackson Brodie is in this one too!

  10. "The smell of salt air and the sound of gulls...
The healing power of kitten kisses..."
These are a poem in themselves. They are indeed beautiful things.

I would love to read that book, sounds like it could be useful for just about anybody. We all have dips and lows, and having a wee guidebook to help us sort through would be most helpful.
