love. red joy - gouache, acrylic, ink + paper- 8.5 x 3.75 - Susan Black

This little piece hardly has any paint at all ... I've asked both Mati + Lisa for pushing feedback and criticism please (an option for any student in this class). Oh Yeah ! Push me Please ! They both reminded me - more painting please, try not to depend on collage I remind myself. But I had this little scene and favourite colour palette in my head, I'd done the drawing, pictured all the bits & pieces, the scraps of mostly vintage paper love that many of you kindly sent to me (I have not forgotten about you*) that would make up this quilted landscape. It just had to come out of my head and in doing so, and landing on sturdy watercolour paper, it's lead me to imagine a much larger, richer painterly version of a scene tres similar. Or maybe a whole series of quilted landscapes. I am so incredibly excited ... can you tell ? If you only knew how much I needed this, I had no idea.

Oh my ... I cannot say enough about how fantastic this e-course is. Get Your Paint On ! I've had, although years + years ago, 5 continuous years of art college spring, summer, fall for 5 years and I loved every minute of it ... so lots and lots of courses including a summer studio, big credit course in painting. I feel I've learned more in this first 8 days (of a 5 week course) then any entire semester long course I've taken. It's amazing ! It's not too late to sign up. The course material will remain up for 2 months after the end of the 5 weeks so there's no rushing, no panic.

* Paper Pledge update coming soon here + I will be emailing all of you. OMG it was August ! eek

  2. you are tempting me with this E course, because i am in a rut. I have to say, though this piece is collage, youve used it in a very painterly way -particularly with the overlaying of clouds. Ive always liked your limited palette of warm neutrals and black and red so this one is a winner to me. really glad to hear you so excited and looking forward to more posts about this class

  3. Hey Chickory - I think the course is BRILLIANT !! and I've had a lot o'courses over my life. The good thing about this little collage is I'm thinking of it now as a small study for a much bigger, way more painterly quilt landscape - and I can't wait. My mind is spinning in such a good way.

Best $99. USdollars I've spent in a long time. xox S

  7. Hey Veronica ! there's a private flickr site where we all upload our pieces and have massive group crits, questions, comments- a fantastic class community - it's so amazing that I can continue such quality art education from my home in my sleepy little seaside village. I'm recommending it highly !! and they plan a Part 2 later in the year.

Maybe I'll see you there ?!? xo S
